Healing Garden for Horses: Mares Shop the Herb Garden

My horse herb garden is doing great; the herd's reactions are so interesting! My mares visit it together, like friends going shopping; they sniff here and there, taste a bit of this and that, all the while exchanging glances and thoughts. Jenny, my small donkey, has chosen Lemon Balm as her favorite; she keeps the leaves nicely trimmed!
Usually my gelding Renn looks at them, sighs, and continues to graze the pasture. He's leaving the shopping to the girls!

"In my own experience horses love to graze on plants such as Peppermint (menthe piperata), Spearmint (menthe spicata), Chamomile (anthemis noblis), Thymes of most varities, Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis), Violets (violet odorata), Wild Roses, Marjoram (origanum vulgare), Lavenders (officinalis and others).

Gifting free access facilitates their free grazing as and when they most need it; tubs/half barrels or wall hanging mangers may all be planted up to give access, or if grazing is suitable you can just plant patches. Plants they eat lots of you would want to grow more of. People do complain, well I planted some but they ate all of it ........... this is a case of them needing more :)

The more diverse the forage you can provide for them to eat while it is growing and therefore still alive, vibrant with nutrients and detectable by their smell signature, the more healthy they can keep themselves.

For example horses prone to colic adore to eat roses; the oil from the flower has been found to have anti bacterial, anaesthetic and relaxing qualities all of which may help their digestive tract clean and relaxed & so in their own way they are managing their own weaknesses which they instinctively nourish BEFORE we are able to see/detect any sign of major physical incident."
